Convenient Pet Boarding? What a concept! Airport Pet Hotel Saves Pet-Owning Travelers Time, Hassle, and Money.

March 7, 2004--Pet owners, imagine this scenario. You're headed out of town for few days and need someone to look after Rover. You're traveling for business on short notice - or for a holiday weekend - and friends and family aren't available for dog duty. Time to call a kennel.
If it's summertime or a holiday, forget it; they're booked 4 weeks out. Otherwise, after a few calls, you find a vacancy - in a kennel on the other side of town. Hmmm, not enough time to get out there the morning you leave. Looks like you have take Rover out the afternoon before - when you're already rushing to tie up loose ends at work and pack up at home. What a hassle!
There is a better way, and it's coming to Portland. Two local dog owners, Chong Jones and Geoff Wittreich, are opening Airport Pet Hotel this spring. At 6212 NE 78th Court, the pet-boarding facility is conveniently located between Columbia Blvd. and 82nd Ave, and is under 5 minutes from PDX.
But wait, it gets better; Airport Pet Hotel is also sandwiched between 3 Park-and-Fly facilities. Not only can you drop off your pet on the way to the airport, you can leave your car and be shuttled to the terminal, as well – all in one stop. It's a nifty idea that Jones first had several years ago.
"I used to travel a lot for business," says Jones, "and I had a hard time finding anywhere to leave my dog, let alone somewhere on my way. I remember thinking, on many occasions, that someone ought to open a kennel near the airport."
The idea gathered momentum last summer, when Jones and his Northeast Portland neighbor, Wittreich, found their ideal building near PDX.
"The space is great," says Wittreich. "High ceilings, wood beams, and loads of skylights give the place a really bright, airy feel. Plus, it has tons of space
for exercising dogs."
Airport Pet Hotel is scheduled to open March 15, with 40 indoor kennels and room to grow. The accommodations are designed for "cageless boarding," where dogs enjoy supervised exercise and play all day and retire to their own individual kennels at night.
